Let's get sciency

See For Yourself

Most companies test recoil by strapping a rifle into a test rig and measuring pressure between the pad and a steel plate. But, a human shoulder isn’t like a steel plate. Their tests ignore shoulder movement and skin softness, so they design pads that are way too hard.

The real problem is flawed testing.

We spent months creating advanced computerized sensor systems that measure pressure on various spots on the shoulder, and track scope movement. We test with actual human shooters and statistically significant sample sizes.

This graph compares The Backstop Recoil Pad with the factory pad that comes on the premium MDT HNT26 chassis in a rifle chambered in 7mm PRC. No funny business. That’s an exact readout from the sensors.

Almost Half the Weight

By using a carbon fiber composite plate and advanced lattice geometries, the Backstop pad weighs 2.1oz. That's almost half the weight of many competitors.

Seamless Design

You may never notice the hexagon pattern on the top plate that hides the screw holes, or the dimpled edges that keep it from showing signs of wear, but we will, and we want you to have the best.

Ready For War

We tested it in extreme cold to make sure it still has the right supple squishiness. We put it in a hot car to make sure it won't get damaged. Left it in the sun, jabbed with a fork, sumos, farts, all the tests.

Backstop Throne - Protective Case for Recoil Pads

Meet The Throne

The Case that Protects Your Pad's Squishiness in storage

The problem with squishy recoil pads is that they get permanently deformed if you store your gun butt-down for long-term storage. To stop this, others compromise their designs by making their pads extremely stiff, which won’t reduce recoil well.

Backstop doesn’t compromise. We invented the “throne”–a guard that protects your pad’s supple squishiness during long-term storage. Backstop isn’t fragile. It’s fine to store it on the butt pad for a week while at the hunting cabin, but for long-term storage, just give it the throne.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Oh yeah!  There’s an obvious difference in the feel of the recoil impulse on your shoulder.  If you shoot a lot and know what your rifle’s recoil feels like, you’ll definitely feel it.

However, some of our competitors tout “UP TO 70% recoil reduction.” By nearly every metric in our testing, the Backstop Pad outperforms the competition, but saying “70% recoil reduction” is misleading in our opinion.  It doesn’t FEEL like that to the shooter.  I’d estimate it feels more like 35% less on most guns.

But the feeling on your shoulder isn’t actually the point of the Backstop Pad.  We care more about you being able to spot your impacts through the scope, and for that, it’s a game-changer.

I should also note that we tested pads in as light of guns as 6.5 Creedmoor.  We frankly didn’t think we’d see much difference Creedmoor because the recoil impulse is light, but we actually made significant improvements in the ability to see through the scope and spot impacts during recoil.

This is where we saw the biggest gains in performance.

Most companies don’t want to make different densities because it means more SKUs and more shelf space.

Because we sell direct to consumer with lean manufacturing processes, we can dial it in to your gun.

A pad can’t be too soft or it “bottoms out.”  It can’t be too hard or rifle velocity isn’t sufficiently slowed before the peak and momentum builds.  As long as a rifle’s recoil is between those extremes, there isn’t too much difference.  So when you order, we do a calculation and place your rifle in one of five recoil categories and make a pad matching that density.

We spent many thousands of dollars testing countless materials and manufacturing processes before landing on the supple squishiness that is the Backstop Pad.

Grippiness was important to us.  It had to have just the right amount of grip so it doesn’t slip on the shoulder during recoil, but not so much that it gets caught on your shirt and makes it hard to adjust on your shoulder.

I think you’ll like the feel of it.

Yes.  Compared to injection molding, 3d printing is (1) MORE expensive for us to manufacture (2) has a much LARGER up-front cost, (3) takes LONGER to produce each pad, and (4) INCREASES our cost of goods.

So why don’t we use a traditional manufacturing method?  Because none of them can produce the intricate lattice geometries that we found to perform far better at soaking up recoil.  In making Backstop, we were determined to choose a no-compromise approach to performance.

You’ll be surprised when you hold a Backstop pad in your hand.  It looks and feels high-end.

Our goal for 2024 is to make a Backstop Recoil Pad design for every mass-production gun and stock made in the last 10 years.  It’s an ambitious goal, but we think we can get close.

Throughout the year, you’ll see more and more models become available.

It takes our engineer about three full working days to create a new design, and then we have to test it on multiple guns to make sure it’s right.  The process is time-consuming, but soon there will be a Backstop for every gun.

That’s the patent-pending “throne.”

Recoil pads from our competitors are WAY too stiff to reduce recoil effectively.  It’s not that they can’t make their pad softer, it’s that if they do, it will deform and damage the pad if you store the gun butt-down for a year in your gun safe.

The Backstop Pad is all about extreme performance.  The throne takes all the pressure off the pad so it won’t be damaged during long-term storage.

The Backstop pad isn’t fragile.  You’ll be fine leaving your gun resting on the pad for a week while at the hunting cabin, but for more than a week of storage, either store the gun horizontally, or just use the awesome throne to protect your pad.  It’s included in the box with every pad we sell.

We’re hunters, so believe me when I say we EXTENSIVELY tested durability.

Jim jabbed our prototypes with forks hundreds of times to make sure it wouldn’t show wear easily.  He left it out in the hot summer sun for 3 months to see how it would stand up to the elements.  We tested it in sub-zero temperatures, left it in a hot car, drove a car over it, etc.

It’ll hold up to whatever you throw at it… unless the thing you happen to be throwing is a grenade.  We haven’t tested that.

We get it. While Backstop certainly isn’t the most expensive on the market, it is still a premium product, and we think it provides the best performance.

We can make it cheaper, but we’d have to compromise performance.  Each pad we make requires over 5 hours of machine time, and we use exotic materials like carbon fiber composite plates and high-performance materials.

If Backstop is too expensive for you right now, we get it!  We still want you to have a good pad, so we recommend Limbsaver as an alternative.  Our computerized testing of pads from the competition shows it’s the second best recoil pad out there.  It’s no Backstop, but it’s better than most factory pads.
